A business missing from an AI answer almost always has the same problem: the sources the answer is built from do not know the business, or do not know it clearly enough. What that means in detail depends on the assistant.
Why can't ChatGPT find my business?
Also asked as: Why doesn't my company show up in ChatGPT? · Why is my business missing from ChatGPT?
ChatGPT can't find your business because it is missing from the sources the answer is built from. There are exactly two routes into a ChatGPT answer: the material the model was trained on, and a live web search that ChatGPT runs itself for current or local questions. A business on neither route does not appear in the answer.
What decides this is not whether you have a website, but whether your name is linked to your service and your location in other people's sources: industry directories, review platforms, local press, trade lists, forums. To a language model, a website with no mentions elsewhere is a single, unconfirmed data point.
Two technical causes are more common than people expect. First, if your robots.txt blocks OpenAI's crawlers, your site can reach neither the training material nor the search index ChatGPT cites from. Second, if your website only builds its content in the browser with JavaScript, those crawlers see an empty page, because they do not run JavaScript.
Why doesn't ChatGPT know my company?

For a language model, knowing a company means it appeared in the training material often and clearly enough for the model to reproduce it without looking anything up. That material is a snapshot of the web up to a fixed date, not today's internet.
Three typical cases follow from this. A business founded, renamed or moved after that date cannot be in the model's knowledge at all. A small local business rarely reaches the necessary frequency, because little is written about it. And a business that appears under changing spellings spreads its few mentions across several names the model does not merge.
In all three cases the second route matters more than the model's knowledge: when ChatGPT answers a question with a live search, your business does not need to be in the training data, only on the pages ChatGPT finds and cites during that search. That route can be influenced within weeks, not training cycles.
Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business even though I have a good website?
Also asked as: Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business? · Why isn't a good website enough for ChatGPT?
A website is your own statement about yourself, and language models give more weight to confirmation from others than to self-description. The businesses that make it into an answer are the ones linked to the same service and the same location in several independent sources.
Design, loading speed and copy quality change little here. What counts is what surrounds your site: a consistently written name, address and phone number across all directories, reviews with written text rather than just stars, mentions on pages you do not own, and structured data that tells a machine what you offer and where, without any interpretation.
A website is therefore a precondition, not a result. It makes you citable. You only get cited once other sources confirm what it says.
Why doesn't Gemini know my business?
Also asked as: Why doesn't Google Gemini recommend my business? · Why isn't my company in AI Overviews?
Gemini and the AI Overviews in Google Search rely on the Google index and on what Google already knows about local businesses. If your Google Business Profile is missing, incomplete or contradicts your website, the most important local source falls away.
Unlike ChatGPT, Google draws categories, services, opening hours, photos and reviews from the profile directly into the answer. An AI Overview does not simply lift the map block; it assembles an answer from several sources and then decides whom to credit. A business that appears only in the map block and nowhere else is rarely named.
One special case is technical: Google's crawler is the only one of the big crawlers that runs JavaScript. A page that builds its content in the browser can reach Gemini and still stay empty for ChatGPT and Perplexity. The reverse also holds: being indexed by Google does not make a business visible in AI answers.
Why can't Perplexity find my business?
Also asked as: Why doesn't Perplexity cite my website?
Perplexity answers almost every question with a live search and names the pages the answer came from. A business missing there is either not findable in the sources it searches, or its page does not answer the question directly enough to serve as evidence.
Perplexity cites only a handful of pages per answer and prefers content that is current, clearly structured and quick to get to the point. A page hiding the answer in its fourth paragraph loses to one that puts it in the first sentence.
The most common purely technical cause is quick to check: if your robots.txt blocks PerplexityBot, your page cannot be cited, however well it fits the question.
How can I check whether ChatGPT knows my business?

Ask about your service, not your name. The question "Do you know Miller Law in Leeds?" already contains the answer, and models almost always confirm a premise like that. Only the question a customer would ask is meaningful, for example "Best employment lawyer in Leeds?".
A single question is still only a sample. AI answers are not deterministic: the same question can be answered differently tomorrow, a different wording produces a different selection, and each model answers for itself. If you ask once and do not appear, you still do not know whether that was the rule or chance.
A measurement becomes reliable across many wordings and several models, evaluated by mention rate and position. That is exactly what the free CitedBy audit does, and it also shows which businesses are named instead.
